Relax In The Caribbean On A St Kitts Holiday
The Caribbean is the perfect destination for laidback beach breaks with elements of sport, nature activities and good food.
St Kitts and its sister island, Nevis, fit this description particularly well, as between them they offer a wide range of things to see and do - in addition to the standard holiday practice of simply lying on the beach perfecting your tan!
Nature lovers will adore all that the island has to offer - whether it's monkey-spotting at Turtle Beach or looking for birds such as brown boobies, frigate birds, black-whiskered vireos, cattle egrets and black-faced grass quits.
Sun worshippers will want to head to Frigate Beach, where a number of water sports opportunities are also available, while golfers will likely wish to visit St Kitts Royal Golf Club.
Capital city Basseterre is worth a visit for fans of Georgian architecture, while Romney Manor and its spectacular gardens should also be inserted into your itinerary.
The Southeast Peninsula has some beautiful white sand coves to explore and keen divers can take advantage of the numerous wrecks, walls, caves and reefs around St Kitts.
In terms of historical attractions, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park is a must-see.
The fortress is often held up as a good example of Caribbean military architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries and reflects several important parts of the region's colonial history, as it was designed by Britons and constructed by African slaves.
St Kitts other claim to historical fame is the fact that Christopher Columbus sailed past the island in 1493 but did not land there - which did not prevent it from becoming known as St Christopher's later on.
On Nevis, there are several areas of historical significance, including the place where Admiral Nelson married Fanny Brice, a local woman, in 1787 and the birthplace of American statesman Alexander Hamilton, which has been turned into a museum.
Other attractions on the island include the chance to go diving, hiking, mountain biking, snorkelling and horse riding, while its botanical garden is packed with exotic palm trees and the Four Seasons golf course is available for those wanting to hit the green during their Caribbean holiday.
