St Kitts other claim to historical fame is the fact that Christopher Columbus sailed past the island in 1493 but did not land there - which did not prevent it from becoming known as St Christopher's later on.

On Nevis, there are several areas of historical significance, including the place where Admiral Nelson married Fanny Brice, a local woman, in 1787 and the birthplace of American statesman Alexander Hamilton, which has been turned into a museum.
