A Taste Of The Caribbean A Little Closer To Home
Many holidaymakers enjoy cheap holidays in Fuerteventura year after year. This popular Canary Island is the nearest to the African coast, and the second largest of the group. It shares the same geographical latitude as Mexico and Florida giving it a near perfect year round climate.
Whilst also of volcanic origin, it is the only Canary Island with no high mountains; instead it is blessed with over 150 fascinating sand dunes. You'd be hard pressed to find more beautiful beaches this side of the Caribbean as seemingly endless sands are dotted with swaying palm trees. With just a four hour flight from the UK, it makes the perfect year round family destination.
The interior part of the island is a stark reminder of its volcanic beginnings with a dry, rocky landscape interspersed with white washed villages.
The main resorts you'll visit on Fuerteventura holidays are Jandina, Costa Caleta, Costa Calma and Corralejo. Corralejo to the north of the island is perhaps the busiest resort, yet never loses its magnetic family charm. Costa Caleta used to be known as Caleta de Fuste and has a wonderful safe horseshoe shaped bay, making it perfect for smaller children. Costa Calma and Jandina are at the southern end of the island and boast probably the best beaches to be found in the Canary Islands.
Holidays in Fuerteventura provide a laid back outlook on life yet there are plenty of energetic excursions on this island should you be tempted to try them. On land why not take a jeep safari through the desert like terrain or even try a camel trek.
Many activities on Fuerteventura holidays are water based and at nearly every resort you'll get to give them a go. There are often lessons available for beginners and guided tuition for more confident participants. Fuerteventura is extremely popular with water sports enthusiasts and every July the P.W.A. (Professional Windsurfers Association) world windsurfing speed and slalom event is held in the south of the island at Sotavento. It attracts surfers from all over the world and is wonderful to watch.
Sailing and fishing are also extremely popular on Fuerteventura holidays with ferry rides over to the tiny island of Los Lobos, catamaran rides over to Lanzarote and pirate ships that sail around the coast.
The island has many PADI Dive Centres along its coastline and divers are drawn here by the warm clear waters. Among the stunning volcanic rock formations below the surface, you can expect to see such beauties as Parrot fish, Moray Eels, Angelshark, Barracuda and maybe even Octopus on a good day.
Whatever time of year it is, cheap holidays in Fuerteventura have it all, from beautiful relaxing beaches and family entertainment to exhilirating water sports; you can be as lazy or as energetic as you like.
